TAPE EXTENSIONS
Tape hair extensions. Let’s face it, we have all been thinking about it. But no one is saying it. So, we WILL! What are Tape Extensions?!! We don’t understand them!! Help us Minque!!!
Well, we thought there might be some confusion (there often is). It’s understandable, really. There are a lot of different types of Hair extensions out there. And while Tape extensions might just be another type, it’s one of the important ones. So, pay close attention!
THE RUNDOWN
Tape extensions are quite new to the market, but they are being well received. They are hot at the moment; most salons find that tape extensions are the most requested method by far. This is probably because this method is 100% natural and does not require any fancy tools to get the job done. And you can forget about all those nasty chemicals. No artificial chemicals required!
Tape extensions are 1-inch wide bundles of hair, that have a strip of adhesive along the roots of the bundle (aka the top). This adhesive, or glue, is how the ‘tape’ extension gets its name. It is attached to the natural hair in a tape like fashion, basically just stuck on, like you would stick a piece of tape. Obviously, it requires a little more skill and precision, but generally the same idea. -
The adhesive is really strong though, so it stays in your hair anywhere from 2-3 months. And it will take anything you throw at it; shampoo, conditioner, water, sweat, fire etc. (ok maybe not fire).
And the process of attaching tape extensions is pretty quick. It might take a bit longer if you are not a professional, and we always recommend using a professional just so that no one is upset. If you do or you don’t, the process usually takes less than an hour, and the more experienced might be able to knockout tape extensions in 20-30 minutes.
Now, I mentioned the process is 100% natural, remember that? Well, on top of being natural, tape extensions are also really good for those ladies that have or are concerned about damaged hair. Even the girls with hair on the finer side should consider tape extensions. Especially because they are attached in small bundles, the stress on the hair is a lot less. So, you can get more volume with less risk.
THE PRO’S
Okay, so right off the bat tape extensions are strong! Like really strong. They are much more permanent than clip-ins, so, if you are one of those gals that has been using the clip-ins and you want something that has a bit more OOMPH. Than tape extensions are for you! No longer will you need to sleep with a hairnet, no longer will you be anxiously checking your hair every morning making sure everything is in the right place. Rest assured? with the tape extension.
Worried about the damage (not the financial but the physical)? Me too! Well I like I said earlier tape-ins are far less damaging than bonded, micro-beads, or sew-ins. If you get a professional to apply and remove them, then you shouldn’t be looking at ANY breakages. That can’t be promised for the other types.
If they are attached correctly (not to your roots but near them) it will allow your natural hair to grow in sync with the extensions, continuing that seamless integration, that we all love so dearly. And removing them is not even a hassle. It’s a very simple and quick process. You can use oil or special removal product (found at any salon) and the tapes will come right out. These babies are also super lightweight, most girls comment on how light they feel compared to clip-ins. And how comfortable they are to sleep with, everyone reckons they top all the other extensions. And we tend to agree. Another bonus, they are relatively inexpensive. Which is a huge plus. Wefts and micro-beads can often set you back bit, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up that expensive lifestyle. So, if you’re in that camp, maybe have another look into tape extensions. You can’t go wrong. And they can also last months if you take proper care of them, make sure to get them redone every 6-8 weeks.
THE CON’S
Most of the negatives occur when doing it yourself or having your BFF do it for you. When you don’t go the professional route, there can be some bumps, so try to avoid them to save frustration. The tape can slip if you don’t get them attached properly! Again, we can’t stress this enough, get a professional to do the work. You don’t want the unnecessary weight or that horrible tugging feeling you get when slippage occurs. That being said, it is not uncommon for one or two tapes-ins to slip even when done by a professional.
There is a bit more maintenance to do, especially when compared to clip-ins. Just to keep them in good health and condition it does require a bit more time and work. They need regular and frequent brushing, washing and drying, and regular check-ups. But if you can manage all that, they are totally worth it. They are by far the most hassle-free of the semi-permanent options (wefts, beaded, fusion).
